The 126th ladies’ singles final, to be staged at Wimbledon today, will deliver a ground-breaking champion. Serena Williams, sport’s perennial trailblazer, could be the oldest to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish and equal the record for most Grand Slam singles triumphs while Simona Halep dreams of becoming Romania’s first individual victor on Centre Court.
For Williams, it would be for the eighth time in 11 finals as she targets that elusive 24th Grand Slam crown to tie Margaret Court’s all-time record; for Halep, who annexed her sole Grand Slam at Roland-Garros last year, it’s a first Wimbledon final. Yet both are so famished for this that you’d never be able to tell the serial champion from the self-confessed “desperate” debutant.
