Rubens wins Northwest Funds Coupe Nor-An Cup slalom

NAKISKA, AB– Shona Rubens (Canmore, AB) won a Northwest Funds Coupe Nor-Am Cup slalom race for the first time in her career, taking today’s giant slalom race in Nakiska, AB.

Rubens had the fastest second run time to and finished in a winning two-run combined time of one minute 48.77 seconds.

“Today was really good for me. I have been needing some confidence boosters and this was perfect. I have been working a lot on my slalom skiing this year and its good to feel like it is starting to pay off,” said Rubens, whose two previous Nor-Am wins have come in giant slalom.

“I have always enjoyed racing at Nakiska and have experienced a lot of success in the past. I feel very at home there. It’s great to know so many people on the hill. All the course workers worked really hard to pull off a great race,” she added.

Rubens was followed on the podium by first run leader, national development team member Eve Routhier (Sherbrooke, QC) who was 0.32s behind. American Sterling Grant was third, 1.18s behind Rubens.

“I’m happy with my results for today. I had a lot of pressure for the second run because I was first after the first run. I will have to get used to that. It is an adaptation, but my second run was good and I am not to far from Shona,” Routhier said.

The Northwest Funds Coupe Nor-Am Cup event in Nakiska continues Tuesday with another men’s and ladies slalom race.
