Group I

HC Leipzig – Larvik HK 20:23 (10:11)

Not long ago, Leipzig defeated a Norwegian team, Byasen, to reach the Main Round of the CL. However, the Norwegian top team, Larvik HK, proved to be too strong at the first Main Round match ever for HCL.

The Norwegians had to fight hard until the very last minute of the game. Leipzig tried hard, but a bad 10-minute period (without a goal right after the break) decided the match. Though Leipzig could keep up with Larvik in the final stage, they couldn’t turn the match completely.

“Those 10 minutes were decisive,” HCL coach Heine Jensen said. “We tried to equalise at the very end, but we couldn’t make it, the difference was too big. Our defence was very good – including goalkeeper Katja Schülke – but we have to improve in attack.”

2,700 spectators attended the game in Dessau – HCL had to leave their usual arena due to a track and field meeting. The high speed game was equal, but Larvik had small advantages. After the break Leipzig missed too many chances, the Norwegians extended their lead to 14:11.

Then the hosts woke up, reduced the gap and equalised at 17:17. But thanks to the saves of goalkeeper Lene Rantala and the nine goals of Linn Sulland, Larvik won the Main Round opener.
