PETCHAME POWERS SPAIN TO SEMI-FINAL

Carlota Petchame's single goal saw Spain earn a richly deserved 1-0 win over hosts Belgium to reach the semi-final of the women's Belfius EuroHockey Championships. The Netherlands cruise into the semi-finals. In Pool B, England and Germany are into the semi's.

It capped a controlled and composed performance, limiting the Belgians to just a small handful of chances across the hour. It meant Spain top Pool A with the Netherlands second and Belgium go into Pool C along with Russia.

Reflecting on the game, Oliva said: 'We had a plan and performed it really well, did the basics right and got our goal and some corners. We have to be really happy with that.'

Goal: 34' Carlota Petchame (FG) 0-1

POOL A: NETHERLANDS - RUSSIA 14 - 0

The Netherlands comfortably got the win they needed to cruise into the semi-finals with their first win in Pool A of the women's competition.

It followed two draws but they never looked like losing this one, taking the lead just 19 seconds into the game and they went on to enjoy their evening in the Antwerp sun.

All the goals came in the first quarter with Sarah Hawkshaw cancelling out a Pia Maertens goal but it was nowhere near the end of the action. Ireland threw everything forward in search of a winner but they rode their luck, too, with Germany missing a penalty stroke and seeing a goal disallowed. In the end, die Danas got the result that mattered.

Sonntag looked back on her own fine performance: 'I would actually have preferred it to have been a bit quieter at the end. But we also showed again how strong our defense is.

'We certainly made life difficult for ourselves. If you want to win, you have to be offensively strong' and we did not guarantee that in the end.'

Goals: 8' Pia Maertens (FG) 0-1,  15' Sarah Hawkshaw (PC) 1-1
