Peru seal Latin Cup win over Thailand
Lima, Peru, Hosts Peru sealed a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 25-17) win over Thailand in the final of the Latin Cup on Tuesday as both continue their preparation for the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix.
Backed by a large crowd packing the gymnasium, Peru relied on powerful spikes to clinch the first set before they had to cling on in the second to take a 2-0 lead.
But Thailand fought back in the third to edge back into contention. But the home side quickly shut the door on any comeback for the visitors as they were backed by a full house of fans.
"I'm delighted with the way my girls' performed. Everyone did a great job and played according to the plan, but we could not pull it off,” Thailand coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai said. “We had a short time in training together because most of them were playing in overseas leagues.”
"Ball reception and defence are the two main things we have to improve before other big events. We also have reserves showing plenty of potential coming through. We have to continue our intensive training, develop our potential, and prepare well for the World Grand Prix in August where we get to play Peru again. Also, we have to make sure we are ready for our title defence in September's Asian Championship in Taiwan," he said.
Elsewhere, Great Britain scored a dramatic 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13) victory over Chile to take third place in the four-team women’s invitation tournament.
The 2011 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix is set to take place from August 5 to 28 with the Final Round due to be held in Macau, China.
