|The Peruvian team celebrate after their victory over Dominican Republic|
Lima, Peru, March 1, 2010 – Peru prevailed over FIVB Women’s Junior Volleyball World Championship runners-up Dominican Republic on Saturday by winning a five-set gold medal match in the First Women’s International Tournament held at Miguel Grau del Callao Gymnasium of Lima.
Daniela Uribe scored with one ace for the final point of the match that finished 3-2 (25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 15-13.) Uribe, Clarivett Yllescas and Karla Ortiz were named the best players for Peru during the three-day competition.
Both Peru and Dominican Republic were unbeaten leading up to the final contest following straight-sets victory over Chile and Puerto Rico in the first two days of the competition.
In the match for third place, Puerto Rico defeated Chile in another five-set battle by score of 3-2 (14-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-17, 15-13.)
Peru and Chile played with their U-23 squad in preparation for the South American Games Volleyball Tournament which is set to be played within that age group.
The entries of Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were U-19 squads as they prepare for the NORCECA Continental qualifiers to next year’s FIVB Junior World Championships.
