PARENTS OF ENGLAND WOMEN’S CRICKET TEAM DIVULGE CHILDHOOD DRIVE TO GO BOLDLY AND ACHIEVE SPORTING SUCCESS

England cricket stars Jenny Gunn, Katherine Brunt, Lauren Winfield and Georgia Elwiss secretly watch proud parents recall their journeys to cricket success

Ahead of the opening round of the Women’s Cricket World Cup on Saturday June 24th 2017, parents of four stars of the England women’s team were invited to the ECB Performance Centre at Loughborough University for a very special interview.

The supportive parents of England cricket stars Jenny Gunn, Katherine Brunt, Lauren Winfield and Georgia Elwiss arrived at the centre for what they believed was an afternoon of reminiscing about their daughters ahead of the first Women’s Cricket World Cup to be staged on English and Welsh soil for 24 years.

However, with Father’s Day around the corner, this would be an interview with a twist. Unbeknown to the parents, their daughters were in a secret location watching every word and every childhood story.

Mick Brunt, father of fast-bowler Katherine Brunt, recalled when his daughter reduced opposition youth teams to tears with her lightning fast bowling, “I remember an away match for the U13s and she bowled a lad out and he walked off crying because he had been bowled by a girl but for me, he should’ve cut the gender out of it; he didn’t get bowled by a girl but by a very good bowler.”

For Katherine and the rest of the players, as they secretly watched their parents speak eloquently about their road to representing England in this month’s Cricket World Cup, a similar theme soon emerged around growing up and learning the sport with family members. A rapid rise through the ranks playing for local boys’ cricket teams also runs through each of their childhoods.

There were many more moments shared, including Bryn Gunn  recalling Jenny’s ambition to be the next Doris Day and Janice Winfield revealing her daughter Lauren’s childhood penchant for playing dress-up with her father’s cricket kit.

Reflecting on the day, Georgia Elwiss was moved to watch her father speak about his immense pride in seeing her develop into a professional cricketer, representing her country to go boldly into this month’s World Cup campaign.

“It’s been really nice to see how my dad sees me now and what he’s wanted for me. The fact that I have almost achieved that and surpassed what any of us ever thought would happen with cricket is an amazing feeling. They have just made so many sacrifices to support my career and development.”
