Opals star Taylor inks deal with Dandenong

DANDENONG (WNBL) - Australia national team star Penny Taylor has signed an agreement with Dandenong Rangers which will see her play club basketball in her homeland for the first time in more than a decade.

Having lost Opals frontcourt powerhouse Elizabeth Cambage to injury, the WNBL club have swooped to secure the services of Taylor, who after her own battles with injury during recent years, is back firing on all cylinders.

Having last played in the WNBL way back during 2001-02, Taylor was crowned a WNBA champion with the Phoenix Mercury earlier this year where she started most games.

The wing player then went on to help her nation secure third place at the FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey last month - also claiming a spot in the All-Star Five.

It has been several years since Taylor played any club basketball at all during the so-called WNBA off-season.

She last appeared during an ill-fated season with Fenerbahce during 2011-12, when she sustained an ACL injury at the EuroLeague Women Final Eight - a blow which ended her dreams of playing at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

While the 33-year-old is not expected to debut for her new side this weekend, she is likely to join up with her new colleagues next week as Dandenong look to find some momentum after a stuttering start to the new WNBL campaign.

Fans have already been shown the ambition of the club via by the acquisition of another WNBA player in the shape of American guard, Cappie Pondexter.

It makes for an exciting line-up with other homegrown talents in addition to Taylor, including Alice Kunek, Lauren Scherf and Olympian Kathleen Macleod.
