Celebrated on March 8, International Women's Day (IWD) is a global movement connecting all women around the world and inspiring them to achieve their full potential.
On the eve of International Women’s Day, Netball Australia has honoured legendary administrator, Margaret Pewtress with the unveiling of the Margaret Pewtress Board Room at its new headquarters in Melbourne.
Netball Australia President, Noeleen Dix says it’s fitting to honour such an outstanding role model who was committed to the advancement of netball for all women.
“Margaret Pewtress holds a special place in the hearts of national and state netball administrators and the sporting community for her outstanding leadership that steered netball’s evolution and the early days of the Australian Sports Commission’s Women’s Sport Promotion Unit in her roles as President and Chairperson in the 1980s,” Dix said.
Australia’s iconic women’s sport continues to play a major role in the lives of more than a million female participants across our country from all walks of life.
Dix says netball enriches Australian community life and connects women around the world.
“The sport of netball has been a passion and a physical outlet for many millions of girls and women around the world and particularly here in Australia where the game is the largest participation sport,” Dix said.
“Netball has become an important part of metropolitan and country communities fostering friendships, fitness and a sense of being part of a fraternity that caters for everyone who wants to play or be actively involved in the game.
“Netball Australia is very proud of its record as a leader in the sporting community contributing to the health and wellbeing of millions of women,” she said.
On International Women’s Day, the world’s best netballers will be action in a pre-season tournament at Sydney’s Olympic Park Sports Centre gearing up for the dynamic, new era of netball – the ANZ Championship.
Netball Australia salutes every woman who has made a contribution to enriching our sport and is proud of our elite Australian athletes who will live their dreams in the new semi-professional trans-Tasman competition.
