England Women’s National Coach Hope Powell has lavished praise on her former captain Faye White.

The 35-year-old announced her decision to retire from football after 16 trophy-laden years at Arsenal.

White earned 90 international caps and led her country at two World Cups and two European Championships, having first been handed the captaincy in 2002.

Powell said: “Faye was a fantastic captain for England and role model for women’s football.

“Her professionalism and conduct were the main reasons I decided to give her the captain’s armband.

“Despite much adversity through injury, she had a tremendous fighting spirit to work hard in order to play for both club and country and lead both to many great victories.

“She is a natural born leader who has been instrumental in helping to drive the game forward.

“All the staff and players wish her all the best for now and for the future and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of her both as a presenter and a supporter of the women’s game.”
