Melissa Reid wins St Rule Trophy

Her victory came just weeks after she won the Helen Holm Scottish open strokeplay championship at Troon. “Scotland has been kind to me this year,” said the 19-year-old Derbyshire golfer who plays at Chevin.

The win also eased Melissa’s disappointment at losing to Yorkshire’s Naomi Edwards in last month’s final of the English ladies’ championship at Littlestone.

“I was really upset about the English, but it’s one of those things and you have to learn from it. I went out in the St Rule thinking that this was the next tournament - and I just wanted to win it so badly.”

Melissa led from start to finish and was 18-under par for the 54-hole event, setting a new tournament record of 209.

In the first round, on the New Course, she scored six-under 69, one shot off the women’s record. The final two rounds of the tournament are played on the Old Course and Melissa shot four-under 72 and eight-under 68.

She was caught briefly by Henrietta Brockway of Yeovil, who shared the lead after 36 holes before her challenge fell away with a 76 in the final round.

“I was pretty relaxed going into the final round,” said Melissa. “I knew I hadn’t played that well in the morning and had still shot four under. I knew the chances were there to be taken in the afternoon.”

She grabbed them, with eight birdies and one eagle during her round. “My attitude is that you have to let your clubs do the talking – and they didn’t do too badly this week!”

England, represented by Melissa, Naomi Edwards (Ganton) and Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) also won the team prize.
