Manchester Velodrome to play host to British National Taekwondo Championships

The impressive Manchester Velodrome will again be in the sporting spotlight this weekend when it plays host to The British National Taekwondo Championships from 6th- 7th September.

With a novice category on Sunday, following Saturday’s advanced competition; the event truly represents a spectrum of British Taekwondo talent, the tournament thereby providing a showcase for those who didn’t travel to Beijing. The event will this year focus on a wider range of age and grade categories, not catering solely for elite athletes but also acting as a stepping stone for less experienced fighters in a high level competition.

Adrian Tranter, Chairman of The British Taekwondo Control Board (BTCB) said “Taekwondo is a sport very much on the rise, demonstrated by our competitive performance as a nation in Beijing where we achieved our first Olympic medal in addition to a 5th and 7th place finish.”

“This tournament is a great opportunity to display our depth of talent and is a showcase for those athletes not involved in the summer games. The taekwondo facilities now available to us in Manchester allow for high level competition such as this.”

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture & Leisure at Manchester City Council said "Manchester's sporting legacy goes from strength to strength and it's great to see another high level sports event in the city. I am delighted to welcome the National Taekwondo Championships to Manchester as the sport continues to grow in popularity and profile, and wish all those taking part every success."
