Malawi claim first victory over Fast5 Diamonds
The Australian Fast5 Diamonds have lost to the Malawi Queens for the first time at a Netball World Series tournament, going down 15-33 on the opening day at the Fast5 competition at Vector Arena in Auckland.
Malawi outscored the Fast5 Diamonds in every quarter, including Australia’s Powerplay quarter, to win their opening game of the tournament and ensure Australia remain winless.
Queens’ shooter Mwai Kumwenda was deadly accurate from all three scoring zones, scoring 27 of Malawi’s 33 goals, including a Super Goal late in the fourth quarter to seal the historic victory.
Inaccuracy from the multiple-point scoring zones hurt the Fast5 Diamonds with Karyn Howarth’s third-quarter two-point conversion Australia’s only score from beyond the single point area.
Trailing 17-11 at three-quarter time, a fourth-quarter Powerplay couldn’t save the Fast5 Diamonds to suffering their second defeat of the tournament and lowest score ever at a Netball World Series.
