Macey Stewart Hoping For Quick Return After Successful Surgery

Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Macey Stewart is hoping for a quick return to training after undergoing successful plastic surgery on the facial injuries she sustained in a crash in the first stage of the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under. The 22-year-old Tasmanian crashed on the final corner of the 115km stage in Gumeracha, South Australia, having set up black and orange teammate Nettie Edmondson for victory.

“On the first stage of the TDU we had had a really great team race, especially being our first race together,” Macey recalled. “Within the last 200 metres I had dropped Nettie off for the sprint - which she won - and whilst still sprinting for the finish myself I clipped a metal barricade that was protruding onto the road.

“As I was travelling so fast and was stopped very abruptly when hitting the barricade, I sustained injuries to most of my body.”

At first it was not thought that Macey’s injuries were too serious - although, having hit her head in the crash, she was immediately pulled from the race - but subsequent tests revealed otherwise.

“After a trip via ambulance to hospital and many doctors visits and X-rays due to the pain I was in, it was discovered I had a severe fracture/collapse in my eye socket, a fractured big toe and lots of skin off,” Stewart explained. “I am now in a moon boot to allow my toe to heal as quickly as possible.

Although the injury to her foot is expected to heal with rest, the fracture to her eye socket meant that she needed delicate surgery.

“I underwent plastic surgery on my eye on Wednesday, which ended up being more invasive than first thought,” Macey said. “I now have a plate replacing my orbital floor and holding my eye in place.  It has taken more out of me than I thought, however, I am hoping to recover quickly and be back on an ergo as soon as possible.”

While Macey should be able to return to her indoor trainer soon, pending proper healing of her fractured toe, it is not currently known when she will be able to return to riding and racing on the road.
