LARISA YURKIW ON PODIUM IN COMBINED AT WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

FORMIGAL, SPA (February 29th, 2008) - Larisa Yurkiw (Owen Sound, ON) added another highlight to what has already been a very successful season, finishing second in the combined today as the 2008 FIS World Junior Championships wrapped up in Formigal, SPA.

The combined event was a combination of the downhill and slalom races held earlier in the week with today’s giant slalom.

Yurkiw, who currently leads the Coupe Nor-Am Cup standings and has two Pontiac GMC Canadian championship titles to her credit already this season, finished second behind Austria’s Anna Fenninger with fellow Austrian Eva Marie-Brem in thir

Marie-Pier Préfontaine (St-Sauveur, QC) was the top Canadian in today’s giant slalom, finishing ninth in a two-run combined time of one minute 43.66.

“Marie-Pier had two really solid runs today and was in fact the fifth fastest racer in second run. She really went for it in the second run which was good to see,” said ACA National development director Mark Sharp.

Brittany Phelan (Mont Tremblant, QC) picked up her second podium of the week, finishing today’s giant slalom in third among J1’s (15 to 16-year-old’s). She was 34th overall.

With two more podiums today, the Canadian team leaves Formigal with a total of four podiums and 13 top 10 results.

“This has been a really good benchmark for us. We are pleased with the improvement we’ve seen over last year but still recognize that there is a ways to go, particularly in the technical events,” said Sharp.

ACA Chief Executive Officer Ken Read, who was in Formigal this week, said organizers did an incredible job getting all of the races off in what were at times trying conditions due to warm temperatures.

Read said he was pleased with the performance of the Canadians throughout the week.

“It is great exposure for young Canadian ski racers to compete in Europe against top-level competition and see the standard of competition that is here. Our athletes leave here with a great deal of confidence that they are competitive against the world’s best,” Read said.
