LARISA YURKIW ADDS ANOTHER PONTIAC GMC CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS TITLE

Yurkiw wins super G while Préfontaine finds podium for the first time

WHISTLER, BC (February 11TH, 2008) It was another decisive victory for Larisa Yurkiw (Owen Sound, ON) in today’s Ladies super G at the Pontiac GMC Canadian championships in Whistler, BC.

Yurkiw, who won Friday’s downhill by more than a second, finished today’s super G in a time of one minute 22.55 seconds to capture the title by 0.58s.

“I am really happy with my performance today. The fog made it a little challenging but this is what I am capable of doing and I am pleased that I was able to win,” said Yurkiw, the 19-year-old alumni of the Georgian Peaks Ski Club.

Marie-Pier Préfontaine (St-Sauveur, QC) finished second in a time of 1:23.13 to be on the first national championship podium of her career.

“My run was a little crazy to be honest. It was my first super G race this season and the only training that I have done was here two days ago. So I was just skiing down as fast as I could and I told myself that we’ll see what happens,” said Préfontaine, a 19-year old member of Canada’s Ladies development team which is known as the 2010 Acceleration Team.

“I am really happy, it’s a really good feeling to be on the podium,” added Prefontaine.

American Alice McKennis finished in third in the super G.

A slalom run scheduled for today, which was to be combined with the super G to make a super combined race, was cancelled due to fog.

The Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships continue tomorrow with the Canadian Junior championships giant slalom, which is also a World Junior qualification race.
