Kitesurfer, Whiteley wins again

Fresh from the Kite Tour Europe where she took first place in the Kite Loop Contest at the first round in Sylt, Germany, professional kitesurfer Hannah Whiteley was back on form as she competed in Round 4 of the British Championships at Hunstanton this last weekend.

Competing for her third British title, 19 year old Hannah, from Stockport, Cheshire breezed through the heats and semi finals to face new girl, Beth Lygoe, from St Lucia, in the finals. Although Beth is a good rider the challenge proved too much for her and Hannah took her third win in the series, placing her 520 points ahead of fellow competitor, Holly Kennedy.

Hannah said, “I had a fantastic time at the European Championships in Germany and Italy and gained a lot of experience riding against some incredibly skilful riders. I didn’t do as well as I wanted in the freestyle championships, taking a 4th in Germany and a 3rd in Italy, as I know that I can do better but winning the Kite Loop Competition was amazing and got me really fired up for the British Championships.

I always look forward to competing at the Hunstanton event; it’s organised and run by the local council and volunteers from Hunstanton Sailing Club and has loads to do and is well supported with literally thousands of spectators. But I didn’t have too much time to prepare as I only arrived back in the UK a couple of days before the British Championships and to be honest, after losing my passport in Germany before traveling onto Italy, I was beginning to wonder if I would get back at all!

I’ve now got a solid lead for the overall British title which is brilliant but there’s no time to be complacent. There’s always room for improvement and I’m going to be training hard to raise my game even further. There are two more rounds remaining for the British Championships which will be held in Ayr in September and Blackpool in October and one for the European Championships, which will be held in France in October. But before that I’m going to be competing in the PKRA World Tour in Germany at the end of August and I want to make sure that I pull out all the stops and give it my best shot at all four competitions.

I’ve had tremendous support throughout the year from my sponsors, ExPix, Wainman, Chiemsee, Prolimt, and Kititright and it would mean so much to be able to thank them by retaining the British title and possibly gaining a European one.”

And as if one champion in the family isn’t enough, Hannah’s Dad, Pete Whiteley is now on course to win his fifth British Kitesurfing Championship title with a lead of 345 points!
