KEN - Nairobi teams retain the regional Inter Cities crowns


NAIROBI (Inter Cities championships) - Men and women's teams over the weekend retainedpala 86-67 to retained the East and Central Africa Inter Cities championships during tough final
matches played at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.

It was a repeat of last year's finals played at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala, Uganda, where Nairobi men beat Dar es Salam 68-57 while the women
out paced host Kampala 62-57.

This year's finals played before a delirious audience, was alot more convincing as the Kenyan players produced a super show late in both games to win 84-77
and 86-67 in the men and women category respectively.

Nairobi men were ahead 22-16 in the first quarter but a tough Dar side took the second 23-18. The third was a 16-16 stalemate with Nairobi taking the last 28-22.

Ancette Wafula led the scoring chart with game high 26 points, Griffin Ligare managed 14 and Yoni Wanambiro, named MVP added another 11.George Tarimno made 16,
Jacob Marenga 13 and Ashif Harun 11.

In the women's match up, Nairobi led in the first quarter 20-19, Kampala charged back to win the second 21-12 and the third 24-31 before took the last 31-15
with MVP Caroline 'Majeng' Achieng starring.

Achieng, Hilda Luvandwa potted 13 points and Joyce Makungu 14. For a depleted Kampala side, the key was Becky Akulo who bagged 16 while Agatha Balidawa 14.

In the semi finals, Nairobi women blanked Dar 86-46 and Kampala out lasted Nairobi Versities side 82-66. The men's semis saw Nairobi hit Mwanza 77-59 and Dar
shut out Nairobi Versities 69-63.

Rodney Genga scored 15 points and Paul Nyakinda added 16 as Nairobi Versities select hit Mwanza 88-74 to bag the bronze. Francis Shilinde made 12 and Vincent Shida
12.

In the ladies third fourth game play offs, Nairobi Versities prevailed again with an easy 65-44 win over Dar. Sarah Chan bagged 13 points and Irene Makori 17.

In the women's semi finals matches, Nairobi blanked poor Dar 86-46 while Kampala on the other hand shut out a stubborn Nairobi Universitites select side
82-66.

Nairobi men had it all too easy against Mwanza winning 77-59 while Dar had to use all the trcks to overcame another Nairobi University Select side 69-63.
