A successfully converted penalty corner in each half against Chile today ensured England’s progress to round two from second place in Pool A at the Junior World Cup in Boston.

With Korea having beaten France earlier in the day, both sides knew that they would be guaranteed to progress to the medal round Pool E no matter what the result.  Keen to avoid a large defeat like they had experienced to Pool-toppers Korea on day one, Chile set out to defend from the outset, adopting a half court defence that allowed England plenty of possession but few attacking opportunities.

The English breakthrough came from a set piece as Lauren Turner fired home her second of the tournament to give England a deserved half time lead.

Into the second half and the heat began to take its toll on the players, who were playing their third match in four days.  The South Americans continued to defend deep and in numbers, offering little space for the English forward line to utilise and with England pressing for a second goal Chile always looked dangerous on the counter attack.

England’s control of the game was eventually rewarded with a second goal five minutes from time when Abi Harper scored her first of the tournament from a penalty corner to ensure England finished the pool level on points with Korea but second on goal difference.

Assistant Coach Martin Rodgers said afterwards, “It was a tough game against a well organised Chile team.  Although we saw plenty of the ball it was difficult to break them down and overall we didn’t create as many chances as we’d have liked.  Playing as they did though, Chile were always dangerous on the counter attack so we’re pleased that we’ve been able to grind out this result.”

England now progress to the medal round Pool E.  Sam Quek was again rested due to injury.
