BRITT JANYK TOP CANADIAN IN SESTRIERE SUPER G

SESTRIERE, ITA (February 10TH, 2008) – Britt Janyk (Whistler, BC) continues to build on what is by far the best season of her career, today finishing the World Cup super G in Sestriere, ITA in 12th place.

The race can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet at 2:30 p.m. ET / 12:30 p.m. MT.

Janyk, who currently occupies 12th in the overall World Cup super G standings, completed the Kandahar Banchetta piste in a time of one minute 22.08 seconds.

“Finishing 12th is great but we definitely want more because we know we can finish better,” said Janyk, who has 480 World Cup points to sit 11th in the overall standings. Her previous best World Cup overall finish in seven seasons on the circuit is 28th, which occurred last season.

It was a rare shared victory as Austria’s Andrea Fischbacher and Fabienne Suter of Switzerland each stopped the clock at exactly 1:21.06. Germany’s Maria Reisch was third.

“Conditions were great today and perfect all week, cold in the morning and beautifully sunny all day,” Janyk said. “It’s one of those hills where it’s not a super difficult hill but you really have to have a good clean run top to bottom if you are going to challenge for the podium.”

Kelly VanderBeek (Kitchener, ON), who is also in the midst of a career-best season, finished 18th today. VanderBeek’s current ranking of 17th in the Ladies overall standings is three ahead of last season, her previous best result.

There were a handful of crashes on the day, including Emily Brydon (Fernie, BC) who was not injured. Austrian Maria Holaus suffered the most spectacular fall and was airlifted to hospital with possible head and other injuries according to early reports.

Brydon, VanderBeek and Janyk will fly to Canada tomorrow getting a few days rest before TELUS presents the Whistler World Cup. The Ladies race the TELUS Whistler downhill February 22nd followed by the TELUS Whistler super combined on February 24th.

The Canadian Ladies technical team heads to Zagreb, CRO next for a slalom race on Friday.
