ITU Events in South Korea Update

The Korean Triathlon Federation made two big announcements today; a new event in the nation’s capital and a slight change in date to the Tongyeong BG Triathlon World Cup.

In preparation for a 2012 World Championship bid, Seoul will host an ITU Asian Continental Cup on May 25th, 2008. It will mark the first time an ITU sanctioned international triathlon event will take place in the South Korean capital. Previously ITU World Cups have been held in Tongyeong, located at the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, including the fourth stop of this year’s BG Triathlon World Cup series.

The ITU Continental Cup has been confirmed after the race course was approved by Gergely Markus, ITU Event Development Director and Technical Delegate for the triathlon competition at the Beijing Olympic Games. The Korean Triathlon Federation aims to set prize money at $50,000 USD for the event. More information will be available on the website soon. Korea is also hosting an Asian Cup in Sokcho on June 15.

As for the this year’s BG Triathlon World Cup event in Tongyeong, the organizers have had to move the race forward to April 26 in order to accommodate live national television coverage.
