These championships confirmed that the future of Korean short track speed skating is very strong, with both the ladies and men’s World Junior Champion titles going to skaters from Korea. Ah-Reum Noh finished on top of the overall classification in the ladies competition, while on the men’s side, it was Cheon-Ho Um to finish first overall. In fact, the Korean team took five of the six overall classification podium places.

This weekend’s ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships schedule had the athletes compete in the 500, 1000, 1500 meters distances, with the top points earners after three events, competing in a 1500m Super Final.  The championships closed with the 3000m relay events.

The weekend began with the 1500 meters events. In the ladies competition, Ah-Reum Noh (Korea) started her quest for the World Junior Championship title by taking the win in the distance ahead of her teammates Eun-Byul Lee and Mi-Yeon Lee. Both finished second and third respectively. On the men’s side, Cheon-Ho Um (Korea) also began his championship quest on a strong note, with a win in the 1500 meters event. He finished ahead of his teammate Seung-Woo Sung. Third place finish went to a local skater, Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (Canada).

In the ladies 500 meters, cheered on by the home crowd, Canadian skaters dominated the podium. Marianne St-Gelais (Canada) finished in first, while her teammate Valérie Maltais finished third. Arianna Fontana (Italy) managed to split the Canadian skaters for second place. In the men’s 500 meters event, American skater J.R. Celski won the distance ahead of Viktor Knoch of Hungary. Third place finish went to Dong-Kun You (Korea).

Ah-Reum Noh skated her way to another top podium finish by taking the win in the ladies 1000 meters event. The ladies 1000 meters was an all Korea affair, as second and third place finishes went to Eun-Byul Lee and Mi-Yeon Lee respectively. On the men’s side, Don-Kun You of Korea managed to take the win, finishing ahead of two Canadian skaters. Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu earned his second podium finish of the weekend by taking second place, while his teammate Maxime Fortin finished third.

The stage was thus set for the 1500 Super Final for both the ladies and men’s, and the Korean domination continued. In the ladies event, Korean skaters took the top three podium finishes; Eun-Byul Lee finished first ahead of Mi-Yeon Lee. Finishing third was Ah-Reum Noh, which allowed her to become World Junior Champion. In the men’s event, Cheon-Ho Um (Korea) won the event ahead of J.R. Celski (USA) and Dong-Kun You (Korea). The win allowed Cheon-Ho Um to be crowned Junior World Champion. The weekend’s racing concluded with 3000 meters relay events, with both the ladies and men’s events, marked by tight racing and a few disqualifications. In the ladies event, first place went to Italy, while Canada finished second. Unfortunately, both Korea and China were disqualified, and thus unranked. In the men’s event, the win went to the team from the United States, followed by China. Two teams were also disqualified in the men’s event: Canada and Korea.
