Iron Girl announces new half marathon

Dec. 1, 2010-Today, Iron Girl announces the launch of a new half-marathon in Clearwater, Fla., in April.  The new Iron Girl Clearwater Half-Marathon and 5K Run/Walk will kick off the 2011 Iron Girl Event Series.  The half-marathon will replace the 15K option seen last year.

“Clearwater is excited to host the new Iron Girl Clearwater Half-Marathon and 5K next year,” said Frank Hibbard, Mayor of Clearwater.  “This new event strengthens our five-year relationship with World Triathlon Corporation.”

"We’re looking forward to bringing an Iron Girl Half-Marathon to beautiful Clearwater Beach early next year," said Judy Molnar, vice president of Iron Girl.  "Since the launch of the brand, Iron Girl has been committed to building its event presence in the Tampa Bay running market.  This event is the first in the new Iron Girl Half-Marathon Series, which will introduce additional events in 2011 and see growth in 2012.  The half-marathon is the ‘it’ distance and Iron Girl will provide an unmatched event experience.”

The half-marathon will feature a scenic one-loop course that will start and finish at Clearwater Beach. The 5K will begin at Clearwater Beach and turn around before the Memorial Causeway.  While participants won’t be running on sand, they will enjoy breathtaking views of the gulf.  Along the course, participants will experience 12 entertainment zones featuring a DJ spinning motivational music and pre-requested songs.  Event amenities will include a catered Breakfast Café and concert, as well as performance shirts sized for women, professional timing, personalized race bibs, custom finisher medals, awards, giveaways and more.

“We’re excited to have Iron Girl return to Clearwater and to see the event expanded to a half-marathon,” said Kevin Smith, director of the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission. “Our continued partnership reinforces our place as a leader in the sports tourism industry.”

Launched in 2004 with just two races, the Iron Girl Series has grown to include 13 events nationwide, varying in distance from 5K to duathlon and triathlon.  With the mission of empowering women toward a healthy lifestyle, Iron Girl has celebrated finishers ranging in age from five to 81 years old with an average age of 35.
