A torrential downpour delayed the start of the second round by two hours and almost 20 players have yet to finish, including two from the English Women’s Golf Association squad.
They will return to the course at 8am tomorrow for a shotgun start. The draw for the matchplay stages of the championship cannot be made until they have finished. The leading 32 players will go forward to the knockout.
Meanwhile 17-year-old Hannah Barwood from Knowle coped well with the conditions to return a one-over 72. It lifted her up the leaderboard into 10th place. She’s on the same score, but three spots ahead of defending champion Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) who fell away with a disappointing 79; 10 shots worse than her opening round.
Staffordshire’s Rachel Jennings is currently in 25th place and will be waiting anxiously for the remaining players to finish. The England international from Izaak Walton scored 77 in the second round.
Charlie Douglass (Brockett Hall) also finished her round and is currently in a six-way tie for 30th place on 11-over par. Kelly Tidy (Manchester) also completed the second round but is out of the reckoning.
The England players who have yet to finish are Sian James (Bristol & Clifton) and Rachel Connor (Manchester). Sian is four-over for the event with three holes to play and should qualify comfortably for the matchplay stages. Rachel is 11-over for the tournament with two holes to play and would advance her cause immeasurably with a birdie or an eagle.
The championship leader is the Spanish star Carlota Ciganda who is four-under par after rounds of 72, 66.
