With their Beijing Olympic status uncertain, Spain started in a positive fashion in the official test against GB in Terrassa. Having worked the ball into the GB circle in the 4th minute of the game, they took the lead from a penalty corner when Raquel Huercas dragged the ball past Katy Roberts in goal.

In an uneventful first half, GB slowly began to move the ball around with some purpose. By the 20th minute, GB had the territorial advantage but lacked penetration into the Spanish circle. In the 24th minute, GB were awarded for their pressure when Alex Danson robbed a defender to feed Helen Richardson who returned the ball to Alex in the circle. Danson crossed for Jo Ellis (Bowdon Hightown) to dive in on the far post to deflect the ball in for the equaliser.

Apart from a Spanish shot on goal in the 30th minute, it was GB who took the game to their hosts, but they failed to create any good goalscoring opportunities.

Unlike the first half, it was GB who started on the offensive after the interval and they scored what was the winning goal in the 50th minute.

In the 46th minute, Helen Richardson stopped the ball wide of Roberts from a Spanish penalty corner and four minutes later, she dispossessed a Spaniard to run 30 metres into the hosts’ circle to shoot past Maria Rosa in goal. Two minutes later, a break from Spain’s third penalty corner of the game saw the ball move quickly into attack, but the final ball into the circle was mistrapped in front of goal. GB had a further opportunity to stretch the lead after another midfield turnover but Rachel Walker was forced wide and was dispossessed by Maria Rosa in goal.

Head Coach Danny Kerry said “A poor start led to Spain’s lead, but a reasonable amount of control after the goal saw some good phases of play. I’m very happy with the two goals we generated and the manner in which we did that.”

This match was Great Britain’s last official game before leaving for their training camp in Macau. Great Britain will take on Spain again on Tuesday in an unofficial match which will start at 2000hrs local (1900 BST). No caps will be awarded.
