Remember when women’s basketball was comprised of colorful uniforms with long sleeves and stockings? Remember the six-on-six rules and games?
Then don’t miss the 5th annual Granny Basketball Tournament, to be held during the Iowa Senior Olympics at Valley High School, 1140 Valley West Drive, West Des Moines, IA, USA. Eleven teams from around the state of Iowa will compete in games which will start at 8:30 a.m. on June 13 and 14. Gymnasiums will open to spectators beginning at 8:00 a.m.
These ladies, who are age 50 and over, represent traditional women’s basketball—six-on-six. But it’s just as vigorous, just as competitive and just as colorful as the kind played by today’s players. And it represents a traditional aspect of Iowana which is long gone. Many of the players had played for their high school, while others took it up in more recent times. Nonetheless, though the competition can be fierce, a good time is had by all, noted Rita Leitzinger, the tournament director of the state Granny Basketball Tournament.
Currently there are teams in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny, northeast Iowa, Lansing, Cedar Rapids, Indianola, Williamsburg and Center Point.
