Gestel dealt knee injury blow one month before World Beach Volleyball Tour

Dutch beach volleyball player and FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour regular Sophie van Gestel has been sidelined just a month before the start of the new tour in Brasilia, Brazil with a knee injury she suffered on Friday.

Gestel, who only returned last month following an injury to her heel, played on five World Tour events last year with ninth being her highest finish in Klagenfurt, Austria with partner Daniëlle Remmers. Prior to that her highest finish was a silver medal in front of her home fans in the Hague in 2009 while she also enjoyed silver-medal success at the 2008 FIVB Junior Swatch World Championship in Brighton, England.

It is still unclear how long the 19 year-old will be out for as she is still being assessed by team doctors, however she will be keen to get back to the sand as soon as possible after she was highlighted by the Netherlands National Olympic Committee as “high potential” for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
