Germany, Australia and Team GB lead on Day 3

Equestrian Day 4 Preview: Tight medal fight looms

(HONG KONG, August 11) -- Germany leads the Equestrian Eventing competition by a slender margin after passing early leaders Australia during Monday's Cross-Country phase. During a round in which no rider finished within the time limit of eight minutes, the German team took the overall lead on 158.10, with Australia less than one jumping penalty behind on 162.

Individual rankings reflect the team changes with Hinrich Romeike of Germany riding Marius into first position (50.20 penalties). Ingrid Klimke and Abraxxas, also of Germany, moved into second position with 50.70 and Megan Jones of Australia is in third with 51 penalties.

Australia lost their lead after Sunday's top rider Lucinda Fredericks incurred 27.20 time penalties. Megan Jones added to her strong Dressage results adding only 15.60 in additional penalties. Shane Rose finished clear in 8.23 minutes.

The British team is ranked third on 173.70, Italy has moved up a place to be fourth on 198.40 and Sweden in fifth position at 200.50. New Zealand is sixth on 210.90.

The United States has slipped from third to seventh place after Rebecca Holder had two run-outs and caught 60 penalties. Double gold medalist Philip Dutton had the best score but ranks only 14th on 60.20.

Athens 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist France is out of the running after Jean-Renaud Adde riding Haston Delpergere was eliminated at the fourth fence.

Eight riders were eliminated, including China's first eventer Alex Hua Tian after he and Chico fell at the eighth fence.

Jumping, the final test of Team/Individual Eventing, takes place on August 12.
