GB wheelchair basketball teams qualify for Beijing Paralympics

BRITISH PARALYMPIC ASSOCIATION

Britain’s women’s wheelchair basketball team have qualified for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, following medal-winning performances at the 2007 Wheelchair Basketball European Championships in Munich.

In the women’s competition, GB had a tough start to the competition coming up against defending European champions Germany and the eventual silver-medallists Holland in their round-robin games.

The team fought back however from these early defeats to beat Spain and Turkey and go through to the bronze medal match where they again met Spain.

This was a make-or-break game for the British team, who had to finish in the top-three to secure a place at next year’s Paralympic Games. The team however showed they were on form and won the match 56-29 to take the bronze and the final qualification spot for the Games.

Germany meanwhile successfully defended their title to take gold ahead of Holland in silver medal position.

The Wheelchair Basketball European Championships took place in Munich, Germany from August 23 to September 2, 2007.

The British Paralympic Association is supported by Lottery funding through UK Sport.
