FRA – French suffer friendly defeats in build-up to Thailand

BOURGES (FIBA U19 World Championship for Women) - French basketball is on a high after the gold-medal triumph by Pierre Vincent's team at the EuroBasket Women in Latvia.

Now another France squad is hoping to keep the country's spirits up with an impressive showing in Thailand at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women.

That competition will be played in Bangkok from July 23 to August 2.

The coach of the France team, Grégory Halin, has made the final two cuts in the squad with Jessica De Amorim and Najet Quardad told they will not travel to Asia.

Halin swung the axe after France's three friendly defeats to the Sweden Under-20 team in Bourges.

The Swedes won the games on June 23rd (66-52), 24th (75-57) and 25th (78-60).

USO Mondeville's Kelly Corre led the French in scoring in the first two games with 10 and 12 points, respectively, while in the third defeat, Maud Medenou of Avenir de Rennes poured in 18 points.

France will stay in the country and travel to Troyes, where they will remain until July 9.

While in Troyes, France will take on Russia, Argentina and the Czech Republic - three other sides competing at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Thailand.

Once in southeast Asia, the French will go up against Australia, Argentina and Korea in Preliminary Round Group A.

France squad for FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Bangkok: Fanny Cavallo, Kelly Corre, Laurie Datchy, Leslie Fournier, Céline Girard, Myriam Igoufe, Bettina Kadila, Aminata Konate, Elsa Martins, Maud Medenou, Alexia Plagnard, Pauline Thizy.
