FOUR NAMED AS NETBALL WORLD CUP RESERVES

Four Samsung Australian Diamonds reserve athletes have been named to support the current team of 12 throughout their preparations for the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup.

Gabi Simpson (Queensland Firebirds), Kate Moloney, Emily Mannix and Tegan Philip (all Melbourne Vixens) will join the Samsung Diamonds athletes for match play sessions at the pre-departure training camp in Sydney from 24-28 June and will then travel with the team to England to take part in the team’s pre-tournament training camp in Manchester.

If any current Samsung Diamonds World Cup team members are injured in the lead-up to the Netball World Cup and need to be withdrawn from the team, the reserve athletes can then be made available as replacements.

Once the Netball World Cup tournament begins, teams cannot introduce replacement athletes in the event of injury. All teams must complete the tournament with only the 12 athletes they begin with.

Samsung Diamonds Head Coach Lisa Alexander said she’s delighted that Simpson, Moloney, Mannix and Philip will be part of the Netball World Cup preparations.

“Gabi, Kate, Emily and Tegan are all members of our squad and having them join us in Sydney and Manchester is going to be of great benefit to our team. Having athletes of their calibre involved will immensely enhance our training and match play environments and overall preparations for the World Cup,” Alexander said.

“We also know that injuries can happen very unexpectedly, so to have Gabi, Kate, Emily and Tegan with us in Manchester up until when the tournament begins is critical to ensuring we are adequately prepared for any scenario.”

The 2019 Netball World Cup is taking place in Liverpool from 12-21 July.

All Samsung Australian Diamonds matches will be broadcast live on Channel 9’s Wide World of Sports.
