Flyers draw secures semi-final spot on Sunday

The Fast5 Flyers co-captain Susan Pratley scored after the final whistle to clinch a 41-41 draw with the Jamaican Sunshine Girls on Saturday, in the process securing Australia’s berth in Sunday’s semi-finals.

Pratley, who has stood out this tournament for her accuracy from distance, showed her composure under pressure as she converted a two-point shot after full-time to record the first draw of the 2013 Fast5 Netball World Series.

The tie sets up a rematch between these two sides in tomorrow’s semi-finals after Jamaica and Australia finished their round robin campaigns in second and third on seven and five points respectively.

The Australians were again quickest out of the blocks and raced out to a 9-6 lead at quarter-time before the Sunshine Girls bucked tradition and took their power play in the second quarter.

The Jamaicans made full use of their advantage, when points were worth double, to hit the lead 22-20 at half-time but the Australian’s kept the scoreboard ticking over from under the post to remain in touch at the main break.

Despite the Australians having the power play in the third quarter, the two sides exchanged goals evenly.

Late in the stanza, Pratley scored from two-point area to nullify a Jamaican super shot and level the scores.

Flyers shooter Tegan Caldwell converted from the inner scoring zone on the stroke of three-quarter time to give her side a 34-32 lead going into the last period.

The Jamaicans took a 41-39 lead with less than a minute remaining courtesy of a super shot and a two-pointer before Pratley scored from a penalty after the final whistle to level the scores.

The Australian Fast5 Flyers will take on the Jamaican Sunshine Girls in the second semi-final (2.00pm AEDST) on Sunday for a spot in the grand final (5.35pm AEDST).
