The Royal Birkdale player has made it her goal to win a place in the 2008 Curtis Cup team and she left school last year to concentrate on her golf.
During 2007 she became French lady junior champion, British U18 strokeplay champion and won the English Women’s Golf Association’s girls’ order of merit.
Her outing in Portugal was her first of 2008 and she held the lead at the halfway stage of the tournament before Spain’s Carlota Ciganda charged past with a course record of eight-under par 63 in the third round. The Spanish star went on to win the tournament by eight shots.
Florentyna, 18, lives in Germany and her father Tim, a golf professional, reports: “She was pleased with the result given that she hadn’t played for a month. It’s very difficult to play here in the winter, but she has been doing quite a bit of practice.”
Florentyna’s previous outing was at the prestigious Junior Orange Bowl Championship in Florida where she finished third.
Her next date is the Spanish women’s championship at the end of this month. This will be the last opportunity for players to impress the Curtis Cup selectors before they make their choices for the team to take on the USA at St Andrews at the end of May.
