INDIANAPOLIS - Shalane Flanagan has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the women's 10,000 meters Sunday night at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Also the American record-holder over 3,000m (indoors) and 5,000m, Flanagan smashed the previous record by 17 seconds, running 30 minutes 34.49 seconds. The prior record of 30:52.32 was set in 2002 by Deena Kastor. Now in its seventh year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week. |
