In Pool A, Serbia defeated Korea in straight sets. "We play European style and they play the Asian style, so it was a problem at the start. It was very hard for my players but they played with heart and head and deserve my congratulations" said Head Coach Branko Gajic. In the same Pool, Belgium beat Mexico with a high wall: 14 blocks in three sets were the definite signature of the Europeans.
In Pool B, the better technique of Japan was evident in the match against Puerto Rico, won by the Asian team relatively easy with their quick attacks while the Puerto Rican team which committed many mistakes and could not use their size advantage. Despite the 14 points signed by Kira Walkenhorst, Brazil won 3-1 against Germany. The words from Head Coach Jens Tietbohl were pretty clear: "The pressured limited our capacity and also Brazil played better than us. Now we have to win our next two matches. The Brazilian volleyball is better than the European."
In Pool C, a tie break gave the victory to Dominican Republic against Peru. In the last set, there was a terrific duel between the two teams and Rueda against Rodriguez. The South Americans opened a 3-point gap at 10-7 with good blocks only to see their opponents to tie at 12-all. The Dominicans missed match-points at 14-13, and 16-15 before winning with a cross-court spike by Calcano. Russia beat Italy 3-0, with high level sets (23, 22, 24). Head Coach Giuseppe Galli: "I want to congratulate Russia because they played better than us. They had good blocking and also good attack. Our team did not play up to its capacity and we hope to do it in our next match. But today, Russia was the better team."
Pool D saw two 3-0 victories for China against Tunisia and for Turkey opposed to U.S.A. As for China, it confirmed its condition as one of the housepower in Volleyball and offered a lesson to the Tunisia team in the last match of the day in Mexicali. "This is the first time our country has the opportunity to take part in a world championship – said Head Coach Rachid Baccouche. - Our players doesn't have that great level but they have a strong desire aboou learning. The Chinese have the better technique and executed very well." Turkey used a good balanced attack to defeat USA in just above one hour. The Turkish squad overmatched the Americans in every phase of the game. Captain Tarah Murrey stated her concerns: "We made too many mistakes today and that was the key for us losing to the Turkish team. I think the short time of preparation at the Olympic Center in Chula Vista had to do with it."
