Final Test for England as they loose 1-0

Sunday 24 February

Megan Rivers 25 (F)

The Gold Coast was the venue for the fifth and final test during GB’s tour of Australia. In cooler temperatures, a very even game was edged by Australia who scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute.

There were not many goal scoring opportunities in the first half. Australia once again took advantage from one of their few chances when Nikki Hudson set up Megan Rivers to convert past Beth Storry in goal.

The best chance for GB came in the 30th minute when Danson had a good shot saved by Rachel Imison in goal.

The second half belonged to GB who kept up constant pressure on Australia. Helen Richardson – who has been outstanding throughout the test series – master minded a wave of attacks which were thwarted by the Australian defence. Five second half GB penalty corners came to nothing, the best chance being a deflection over the bar by Wright.

Australia had a good chance in the 51st minute when Sarah Young could only deflect the ball wide from a cross.

GB threw everything at Australia in the last five minutes but could not score the all-important equaliser.

Danny Kerry said “A very good performance today at the end of a long and very hot trip. Substantial periods of pressure were converted into half chances and penalty corners but in the final analysis, our execution was not good enough. We have learned a great deal in our time here and played some good games. The team now fully understands the importance of detail and application in the remaining months of preparation”.
