FIBA Africa - Afrobasket Women assigned to Madagascar


CAIRO (FIBA Africa) – The 2009 FIBA Africa Championship for Women (Afrobasket) has been assigned to Madagascar. This was decided at the recent Board meeting of FIBA Africa that was held in Cairo, Egypt. The event will be played in the first half of September; the precise date will be announced shortly.

The 2009 Afrobasket Men assignment to Libya has been confirmed. 16 teams will participate from 5 – 15 August.

The FIBA Africa Board has also confirmed the organisation of the 1st Africa Championship for U16 Men and Women. They will be held in 2009 as qualifiers of the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championships. Senegal will be the host for the girls whilst Mozambique will organize the U16 Men.

In order to further boost the development on the continent, FIBA Africa has decided to help certain national federations by providing electronic game equipment (24-second clocks, scoreboards etc) and office equipments (computers, permanent staff, facilities etc). In cooperation with Molten, ball donations are under way and still in progress and many countries have received already their basketballs.
