Farewell Leeds, Three teams remain

As The Co-operative Netball Superleague Grand Final fast approaches, the heat is on for the final three teams in the race to the finishing post.

Leeds Carnegie lost sight of the winner’s trophy in the first round of the Play-offs at the weekend, taking Mavericks through to round three.

Mavericks’ goal shooter Louisa Brownfield worked hard for the 13-goal lead against Leeds, going out to get the ball and pulling off slick passes with the team from the centre to create textbook movements.

Leeds played a strong game but not strong enough as Mavericks maintained their reputation to continue in the game.

Mavericks coach Kendra Slawinski said: “Leeds gave us a good game, we knew it would be a tough challenge. They’ve been on the up throughout the season and the hardest thing is that everyone expected us to walk through it because of our history. It was a tough game and I was pleased with how our athletes approached it.”

TeamBath took the lead by seven goals in a tight game against Loughborough Lightning University of Bath last night. As the home team headed onto court it was evident that their plan was to win every quarter of the match but Loughborough appeared to throw a spanner in the works taking a three-goal advantage only three minutes into the match.

It wasn’t long before the invincible TeamBath shot back into the game to take the lead at each quarter but with only two goals separating the team at three quarter time it was a close game for both sides.

Team captain Pamela Cookey was delighted with the squad‘s performance: “We’re in the final…YIPPEE! I’m so proud of the whole squad to have taken the lead and strengthen it in the last quarter.”

Don’t miss the Leeds v Mavericks game on Sky Sports 2 tomorrow night from 7pm and TeamBath v Loughborough Lightning on Sky Sports Xtra this Thursday from 6 pm.
