ESP – Martinez back in the frame for Perez’s Spain

CADIZ (Olympics) - Spain’s women have begun their preparations for the Olympics in San Fernando, Cadiz and point guard Nuria Martinez is working out with the squad following an operation on a finger injury.

Martinez had to be dropped for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament and was replaced by youngster Silvia Dominguez but Evaristo Perez could take the veteran to the Beijing Games.

"Our intention was to have Nuria Martinez available for the Pre-Olympic but her finger injury prevented her from playing and now, the doctors believe Martinez will completely recover for the Olympics," Perez said.

"Now we are taking Nuria and Silvia although if we have full guarantees that Martinez will fully recover, then she will be the one to go to Beijing."

Spain are in Group B of the Beijing Games with Team USA, Mali, China, New Zealand and the Czech Republic.

They will make their debut at the Olympics against host nation China on August 9.

Spain squad: Elisa Aguilar, Nuria Martínez, Silvia Dominguez, Laia Palau Isabel Sanchez, Amaya Valdemoro, Alba Torrens, Maria Revuelto, Anna Montanana, Tamara Abalde, Lucila Pascua, Cindy Lima, Laura Nicholls.
