ENGLAND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE SQUAD SELECTED

England Hockey have announced the Women’s squad for the Ata Holding Hockey Champions Challenge in Baku , Azerbaijan , (9-17 June) . Azerbaijan will be the first major tournament for the squad’s youngest player Hayley Brown and Leicester's Hannah MacLeod. Canterbury’s Hayley gained her first international cap against The Netherlands, November last year and Leicester’s Hannah MacLeod, having made her debut at the age of 19 in 2003, only picked up three England caps before being selected in this year’s Champions Challenge squad.

The tournament sees the welcome return of Leicester’s Anne Panter who has been dogged by a series of injuries since her last appearance on the International scene back in 2003 the EuroHockey Nations Championships

Players not available for selection included Kerry Williams and Becky Herbert (exam commitments) with Lucilla Wright, Jennie Bimson and Helen Grant on injury rehabilitation. Twelve of the squad were involved in England’s Samsung World Cup campaign, Madrid, October 2006 which saw the team finish in seventh spot and sees the return of Leicester’s Anne Panter after four years out of the international scene having been plagued by injuries. Her last appearance in a major tournament was in the 2003 EuroHockey Nations Championships.

Following on the recent GB Super League which involved many of the tournament squad in different teams, Azerbaijan will give Head Coach Danny Kerry the first real chance to have the squad together for a significant amount of time. He anticipates the tournament will be a stern test for the squad with the likes of China, Korea and New Zealand in the frame. Kerry continued "I am looking forward to giving a significant opportunity to a number of players."
