England women defeat New Zealand in NatWest Women's One day International

England women took the first match of the NatWest Women's One Day
International Series from New Zealand today, by one wicket, at the
County Ground, Taunton.

Katherine Brunt picked up Player of the Match for her impressive spell
of 3 for 31, off 10 overs and for taking England over the line to
victory.

Maria Fahey (61) led the run scoring for New Zealand by clearing the
ropes, before being bowled by Brunt. Two balls later Brunt bowled Nicola
Browne out for a duck, leaving the White Ferns on 148-6. Sophie Devine
(50) followed Fahey and Browne to pick up two maximums before being
caught by Isa Guha off a ball from Jenny Gunn.

Gunn landed the catch of the day, running backwards at mid-wicket to
dismiss Amy Satterthwaith for 51, off a ball from Holly Colvin.

New Zealand finished their fifty overs on 231-8.

Following the wickets of Sarah Taylor (5) and Claire Taylor (24),
Heather Knight (32) got England up and running in the chase, but was
stumped by Rachel Priest, off a delivery from Lucy Doolan, leaving
England 78 for 3.

Charlotte Edwards (70) top scored and crafted a match winning innings
for England, showing her skill with the bat and using the quick outfield
to her advantage. Edwards shared a steady partnership of 81 runs with
Laura Marsh (31), before Brown caught Marsh off a ball from
Satterthwaite, to leave England 127-5 after 32 overs.

England's lower order batters endeavoured to chase down the target,
taking the game to the last over, needing five runs for victory. Brunt
hit a boundary to take the first match of the series for England with
three balls to spare. England won by one wicket finishing on 234-9.

Speaking after the game Charlotte Edwards said: 'I'm really pleased to
get  the series off to a winning start.

'Katherine (Brunt)  put in a fantastic bowling  performance and there
were some good contributions from the batters.

'I always enjoy batting here, I was pleased to get a good score today,
I'm looking forward to coming back on Monday'
