England win silver in European seniors championship

It’s a repeat of last year’s championship when France also pushed England into the silver medal position. France, whose team included European seniors’ champion Virginie Burrus, have now won this title four years in a row.

England captain Cathy Bowerbank said afterwards: “France just played too well for us today. But all our team have played their hearts out and they have done really well to get a silver medal. I am delighted.”

England’s points were scored by the impressive foursomes pairing of Carole Caldwell and Hilary Smyth and by seniors’ strokeplay champion Sue Dye who played great golf to win on the 15th.

In the play-off for third place the hosts, Sweden, beat Scotland 3-2.
