England sweep into European championship semi-finals

They will now meet Sweden, who defeated Finland 6-1. “It’s so far, so good – and we’re playing for a medal now,” said team captain Jenny Clink.

The players won all their matches by a comfortable margin, putting on a fine display of low scoring, peppered with birdies as they mastered the fast and undulating greens. Yorkshire’s Rachel Bell went one better when she chipped in for a winning eagle three on the 12th.

There was additional drama on the 13th hole when Florentyna Parker’s opponent, Benedicte Toumpsin, took her backswing and her driver shattered before she could hit the ball. The hole was eventually halved.

Match results (England names first).

Foursomes: Melissa Reid (Chevin) & Jodi Ewart (Catterick) beat Emilie Geury & Benedicte Toumpsin 6/5. Rachel Bell (Ganton) and Florentyna Paker (Royal Birkdale) beat Laura Gonzales-Escallon & Laurence Herman 4/3.

Singles: Naomi Edwards (Ganton) halved with Tamara Luccioli. Reid beat Gonzales-Escallon 3/2. Bell beat Valentine Gevers 3/2. Ewart beat Geury 5/4. Parker beat Toumpsin 4/3.
