England Women U20s got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start on Wednesday, when they beat hosts Chile in front of a sell out crowd in Coquimbo.

After a goalless first half which was very evenly matched with chances at both ends, the only reason it remained level at the break was down to two fine saves from both goalkeepers.

Chile had an excellent opportunity to take the lead after 29 minutes, but England goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer made a fine save to deny Daniela Zamora, who was through one-on-one.

At the other end, Toni Duggan's close range shot was kept out thanks to an excellent save by Chile's Claudia Endler.

Mo Marley's team took control in the second half though and the deadlock was broken in the 54th minute, when Brooke Chaplen headed home from a Jessica Clarke cross.

The hosts, backed by a fervent home crowd, attacked in numbers as they looked to find a way back into the game but England stood firm and kept their shape.

Victory was secured just ten minutes from time and this time Duggan wasn't to be denied as she broke clear on goal on a counter attack and finished well past Endler to get the Young Lionesses off to a fine start.

They will now face Nigeria in their second game on Saturday evening.
