England shooter Pamela Cookey has announced her retirement from international netball

England shooter Pamela Cookey has announced her retirement from international netball this week.  The former England captain, who made her international debut at the age of 19, amassed 114 caps during her international career, achieving two Commonwealth and two World Championship bronze medals, as well as a silver medal at the World Youth Championships in 2005 during her international career.  She will continue to represent reigning champions Surrey Storm in the UK’s netball superleague during the 2016 season.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s inspirational captain Casey Kopua has refused to commit to playing international netball beyond this month’s Constellation Cup against Australia.  Kopua, who is contracted to play for the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in the 2016 ANZ Championships, refused to be drawn on her international playing future this week, as the 24 Silver Ferns triallists head into camp ahead of the selection announcement for the series on Wednesday.

Netball New Zealand is taking urgent steps to address the country’s apparent lack of elite playing depth by continuing to work on the formation of a new National League, as part of its broader National Competitions Review.  The intention is to build a new league that will act as a development pathway for players which underpins the ANZ Championship.  During the consultation period, feedback has been sought from the country’s Zones and Centres, and NNZ is looking to finalise details of the new competition by the end of the year, so it can be introduced in 2016.

In Samoa, attention has turned from international competition to domestic leagues and cups, with the Business House and Community/Village tournaments now well under way.  Players in the national schools competition have been provided with donated uniforms, collected by England captain Geva Mentor’s mum Yvonne from clubs in England and Australia.  One of the happy recipient teams is pictured.

Singapore’s University Games have reached the finals stage, with Nanyang Technological University qualifying to take on the National  University of Singapore.  For score updates and streaming please visit www.facebook.com/netballsingapore.

Netball Scotland has a new Chief Executive Officer.  Claire Nelson, who previously served on the organisation’s board as a director, started in her new role on 1 October.  Her first role in post will be to act as host at the Netball Europe U21 championships, taking place in Aberdeen this weekend.  All the matches from the competition are to be streamed live:  to watch, please follow the link here  http://www.netballeurope.com/

Finally, Ugandan international star Peace Proscovia has been showing off her shooting skills this week – but on a basketball court, rather than a netball one.  Proscovia, her country’s first professional netball, is set to return to UK side  Loughborough Lightning for a second season in January, but this week week has switched from a free standing post to  a net with a backboard, tp lead Uganda’s challenge at the AfroBasket women’s competition.  Despite Uganda’s underdog status at the competition, Proscovia’s fast footwork and accurate shooting have drawn many positive comments from the media – proof positive that netball can provide transferrable skills for other sports!
