England Hockey League Update for March

Slough regained their first Premier Division title since 2002-03 this weekend, with three games left to play, Purdy Miller and Jane Smith’s goals were enough to defeat Canterbury. Not even a 5-1 drubbing of last season’s champions, Leicester, was enough for Bowdon Hightown, who found there were not enough games left in the season to catch the dominant Slough.

Slough built their success from the back, despite having the perennial high scoring Jane Smith, conceding – on average – less than a goal a game, providing safe foundations to attack and score – on average – 3.5 goals per game. Poynton are putting up a gritty fight to the end of the season in their bid to avoid the relegation play-offs, after last week’s shock win over Bowdon Hightown, they recorded a remarkable 7-1 home win against third placed Olton and West Warwicks; Cath Linaker is finding form at the right time in the season; she contributed three goals.

Poynton are now just two points behind Chelmsford and have a superior goal difference, both teams have yet to play bottom of the table Old Loughtonians for the second time before the last week of the season in which they face off in Manchester. Chelmsford lost 2-4 at home to Clifton having gone in 2-1 up at the half, whilst Ipswich drew 1-1 at home to Old Loughtonians
