England Footballer Karen Carney signs for new FA WSL Season
Birmingham City Ladies’ marquee signing Karen Carney is happy to be back home and has spoken of her excitement at the chance to play a part in the new FA WSL season for the Blues.
Having started her career in England’s second city, the Solihull-born forward has taken in hugely successful spells with Arsenal and Chicago Red Stars before coming full circle back to Birmingham.
“It is really good to be back. To start at a new beginning for the club, with the Super League [coming up], is exciting,” she said.
“It’s my hometown, my family live here, it’s a great club with great people and they were the only team I particularly wanted to join – not that I had the pick of the crop.”
The new semi-professional league will be an unknown for the majority of teams but Birmingham are fast becoming seen as one of the favourites to challenge for the title.
However, Carney is not getting too carried away, insisting they have no expectations and are just preparing to give it ‘110 per cent’.
“For Birmingham, who knows?” she added. “It is a new league, a new team and every other team is new as well. We just have to focus on ourselves, do what we can, put 110 per cent in and see where it takes us.
“There is no expectation for us, we just want to go out there, enjoy it and give 110 per cent every game, every training session and just see what happens.”
