Elene Raynsford - the defending world champion – who finished fifth in the women’s arms only single scull

BRITISH PARALYMPIC ASSOCIATION

There was disappointment for Britain’s Helene Raynsford - the defending world champion – who finished fifth in the women’s arms only single scull. Raynsford had struggled earlier in the championships, suffering an asthma attack in the heats to finish fourth. She fought back however to win the repecharge and qualify for the final, although a tough charge from Brazil’s Claudio Santos, Liudmila Vauchok of Belarus and Poland’s Martyna Snopek pushed her out of medal contention.

All three boats have now qualified a place for Britain at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

Rowing was introduced as a Paralympic sport in 2005 and makes its Games debut in Beijing. Since its Paralympic inclusion there has been a marked increase in the numbers of athletes and countries participating at elite level and this year’s world championships saw a 50 per cent increase in entries in the adaptive boats compared with last year.

The 2007 World Rowing Championships took place in Munich, Germany from August 25 to September 2, 2007.

The British Paralympic Association is supported by Lottery funding through UK Sport.
