EHF Champions League Semi Finals decided

EHF NEWS  with an overview of the past weekend.

The last round of the Women's EHF CL Main Round was played on Saturday and Sunday and the second leg of the quarterfinals was played in the Women's European Cup competitions.

Two out of three Danish teams made it to the main round of the Women´s Champions League. However, they had very different fate at this stage of the competition.

While Viborg HK won Group 1 and will proceed to the semi-finals, Ikast-Brande EH ended last in the same group. Ikast have the dubious honour of being the only team in the main round that failed to collect a single point.

Let’s find an answer to the big difference and to Viborg´s development respect to last season.

When it comes to Viborg, their improvement compared to last year is almost amazing. With pretty much the same team – and even hit by several injuries lately – they managed to reach the semi-finals in convincing style. Last year they said goodbye after the main round.

“A lot of things have changed in Europe and in our own team and coaching staff,” was Viborg coach Jakob Vestergaard explained.

Semi-finals

The Women's European Cup competitions have arrived to the semi-final stage.

According to the Women's Champions League Regulations, there will be no draw at this point; the semi-final fixtures have been decided by the Main Round final ranking:

C.S. Oltchim Rm Valcea (ROU) vs Viborg HK (DEN) Hypo Niederösterreich (AUT) vs Györi AUDI ETO KC (HUN)

The draw for the semi-finals of the Women's EHF Cup, Cup Winners' Cup and Challenge Cup will take place on Tuesday, 24 March 2009 at 11hrs.

Further draw events

On Tuesday 24 March, the Women's EHF EURO 2010 Qualification Draw and the W17 European Championship Final Tournament Draw will also be carried out in the EHF Headquarters, Vienna.
