Edwards wants to end on a high after Australian defeat in the second T20

Charlotte Edwards has called on England to finish on a high after defeat in the second NatWest International T20 handed the Women's Ashes back to Australia.

The tourists took an unassailable 10-4 lead in the multi-format series courtesy of a 20-run win at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, meaning England only have pride to play for in the final match at the SSE SWALEC on Monday.

But Edwards wants to end with a flourish in the double-header in Cardiff, with a sprint-format series win a confidence booster against the world champions ahead of next year's World T20 in India.

The opening batter said: “We want to win the T20 series. Hopefully we can take confidence into the T20 World Cup next March time in India.

“There is a huge amount of pride to play for on Monday at Cardiff. It will be a great occasion, they always are the double-headers.

“Hopefully we can come out and give a good account of ourselves, especially with the bat. The girls have given everything in this series. They have worked hard in the nets and really want to put it right on Monday.”

The hosts continued the momentum they generated from Wednesday's victory at the Essex County Ground in the first innings at Hove as they restricted Australia to 107 for seven.

But, like for much of the series, England struggled with the bat and were dismissed for just 87, their lowest total in a T20I.

Edwards said: “I thought both teams bowled well. On our behalf, there was some poor shot selection. I think there was some great fielding, two unlucky bits of cricket, but ultimately, they outplayed us.

“I thought we did brilliantly with the ball, our bowlers have been absolutely fantastic throughout this series, it is just a shame the batting unit haven't backed that up. That is bitterly disappointing for me and the rest of the team.

“We were pleased with 107 and after the first couple of overs we were right up with it. It was a good wicket. It was just a shame we didn't take advantage.

“It was some poor shot selection and some good bowling. If you can't chase 107 in a T20 match, you are not going to win many games. It is bitterly disappointing.”

Lydia Greenway and Danielle Wyatt reignited England's chase, which in the sixth over was in disarray at 28 for five, with a lively seventh-wicket stand of 17.

The pair's alliance was ended in unfortunate circumstances when Rene Farrell directed a Greenway straight drive onto the stumps at the non-striker's end to leave Wyatt short of her ground.

“I think that was a big moment in the game,” Edwards said. “I thought Lydia played fantastically well there and Dani Wyatt was showing how good a T20 player she is. I thought it was a moment that didn't help our cause. But I think 28 for five in a T20 match is never going to be ideal.”
